Research in Jena

Jena is an internationally renowned scientific centre. The city is home to the historic Friedrich Schiller University and the University of Applied Sciences EAH Jena, which has a strong orientation towards practical applications. A number of well-established research facilities are also based here, such as institutes of the Max Planck and Fraunhofer Society as well as the Leibniz Association. Many of them are located at Beutenberg Campus Jena.

Approximately 4,500 scientists conduct their research in Jena. With a strong emphasis on research in the fields of optics and photonics as well health and life sciences, research in Jena focuses on key issues relevant for the future development of society and economy at large. The slogans "LIGHT LIFE LIBERTY" of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and "where life science meets physics" of Beutenberg Campus highlight the interdisciplinary research in Jena.

The Friedrich Schiller University has submitted two full proposals for Clusters of Excellence to the German Research Foundation (DFG). More information: "Balance of the Microverse" and "Enlightening the Receptome: From Biophysics to Clinical Applications".
