Environmental technology

Jena is one of the leading environmental technology centres in Germany. Business, science and the city work hand in hand here on innovative solutions for climate protection, energy transition and resource efficiency. Companies and research institutions are working together to develop technologies that are in demand worldwide – from green energy and sustainable mobility to intelligent environmental analytics.

At the heart of environmental technology in Jena is the Centre for Energy and Environmental Chemistry (CEEC Jena) at Friedrich Schiller University. High-performance, environmentally friendly energy storage systems are developed here – in close cooperation with industrial partners and energy providers.

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology is also focussing on sustainable technologies. Researchers analyse ecological processes and develop new approaches for bio-based processes and resource-saving applications in agriculture, chemistry and environmental technology.

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF), light-based environmental technologies are being developed in the Green Photonics cluster – for energy-efficient lighting, smart sensor technology and sustainable production. Stadtwerke Jena is driving forward electromobility and charging infrastructure with over 100 charging points. At the same time, they are investing in climate-neutral district heating with the 2040 heating network strategy – using near-surface geothermal energy, solar thermal energy and aquifer storage.

With its municipal heat planning, Jena ensures sustainable energy security for companies and citizens. Energy-efficient measures can thus be strategically planned and implemented in a targeted manner. Jena’s craft businesses use green technologies, for example in building technology and environmentally friendly refurbishment.
