Urban life, science and business in the heart of the city

Jena’s city centre is a multifaceted place where science, business and urban life are concentrated in a small space.

More than 50,000 m² of retail space in Jena city centre offers a broad mix of retail, gastronomy and services – an attractive mix that retains purchasing power and attracts visitors from the city and surrounding area. This is complemented by over 200,000 m² of modern office and commercial space, which gives the digital economy and knowledge-based services in particular room for growth. The young cityscape is also characterised by around 21,000 students at Friedrich Schiller University, whose campus is located right in the centre and brings dynamism and openness to urban life.

Accompanying and shaping transformation

Jena’s city centre is the economic centre of the region, a driver of employment and at the same time an important place of identification for the city society. To ensure that it continues to fulfil this role in the future, the Jena Economic Development Agency is actively driving change together with retail, gastronomy, culture and urban society – with answers to digitalisation, changing consumer behaviour and new demands for quality of life. To this end, key transformation projects have been initiated that will sustainably strengthen the location and open up concrete prospects for the future of the city centre.
