Top-level applied research

The Beutenberg Campus in Jena can be compared with a huge high-performance server. This campus hosts one Fraunhofer institute, several institutes of the Max Planck and Leibnitz Associations, some institutes of the University of Jena as well as two incubation units in close proximity. The Institute for Photonic Technology belongs to the Beutenberg Campus as well. Together they form a unique science community. They offer research and transfer services which are in great demand internationally and thanks to their outstanding quality are highly recommended by customers and partners.

Awards

Research is focused on physics, medicine, chemistry and life sciences. The scientists’ slogan on the Beutenberg Campus is: "Where LIFE SCIENCE meets PHYSICS." Aside from the references from commercial enterprises, numerous scientific awards indicate their success. More than half of all Thuringian Research Prizes to date have been awarded to the extraordinary Science City of Jena.

In 2006 the Beutenberg Campus was awarded the title “Landmark of Ideas 2006”. The same year, Prof. Dr. Ernst Detlef Schulze of the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry was awarded the German Environment Prize. Moreover, the scientists of the Beutenberg institutes have been awarded a variety of further prizes in the last years.
